iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C represent the new smartphones from Apple to replace the classic fifth generation, but also to provide a less expensive alternative to it. Apple’s strategy change was radical and aimed to counterattack Android’s sales. The tech giant has given up traditions and has released two iPhone models in just one shot.
iPhone 5S is the classic successor of iPhone 5. Just like the name clearly states it, it does not necessarily make an evolution, but a revolution. Generally speaking, its reference product receives a well deserved update.
Meanwhile, iPhone 5C tends to maintain the original specifications of iPhone 5. It is addressed to a segment of low budget users. However, Apple has given them the opportunity to choose a distinct color for the case.
Not sure which one to choose? Read on for more information and a detailed comparison.
Design and overall construction
Over the past years, Apple did not impress its audience with too many major changes, especially when it came to the design. The new models 5S and 5C make no exception either. Basically, they come with the same display size. Apple’s successful recipe was kept – a large screen and a central home button placed in the lower side. The 5S button is now surrounded by a silver ring. Other than that, both 5C and 5S buttons come with a small square on the middle.
The change was triggered by introducing Touch ID – a fingerprint scanner. This security measure was rarely seen before, but it was also completely new in the smartphone segment. The ring has the role to activate the scanner, which may also work in iTunes when you buy an application.
All three gadgets maintain the classic design – simple and efficient. They measure 7.6mm in thickness and come with slightly rounded corners. iPhone 5C comes with different materials though. Its low cost is given by the aluminum case. The other alternatives are made of aluminum, while their backs and sides are separately built too.
Some users were disappointed to find out that iPhone 5’s IPS screen only has a 640×1136 pixel resolution for a 4” diagonal. However, most of their complaints disappeared when they actually started using the smartphone. It is more than enough.
Although the trends might be slightly different in such technologies, iPhone 5C and 5S do not bring any major changes, so both of them come with exactly the same specifications. Despite this idea, users have a serious advantage – iPhone 5 applications are compatible with the other units too. They can provide an identical experience without having to wait for updates from their favorite developers.
Traditionally, Apple comes with minor improvements for its smartphone. As a direct consequence, iPhone 5S comes with an Apple A7 chipset. This is the first smartphone chip built on 64b. Its effects are easy to notice – the processor is two times faster and the graphical improvement is five times faster than in iPhone 5. Moreover, the A7 chipset has an innovative M7 coprocessor, which has the role to identify movements for specific applications – fitness, localization and so on.
On the other hand, the internal memory is identical – 16GB, 32GB or 64GB.
Meanwhile, iPhone 5C is practically an iPhone 5 with a plastic case. The two smartphones share the same hardware specifications. This is not a bad decision, since the hardware platform is powerful enough to run multimedia content.
Apple has tried to come with a few improvements in the camera MP battle with Android. iPhone 5S has the same 8MP camera, but it comes with an f/2.2 aperture, a 15% larger sensor and a new type of flash – True Tone Flash.
The new flash has two LED lights – a yellow one and a white one. The camera can use both lights for more natural colors. Besides, it may also shoot videos in slow motion – 120 frames per second in a 720p resolution.
Unsurprisingly, iPhone 5C does not come with these specifications. It is similar to iPhone 5.
iPhone 5S and 5C come with iOS 7 – a new version at the time the unit hit the market. Obviously, the same operating system is also available for iPhone 5 and older versions. The three gadgets offer the same level of functionality; this is one of the major advantages of the Apple operating system.
Simply put, iOS 7 was adapted for the 64b chipset and draws the attention with a new icon design, a better notification center and a new interface for the camera. Past users will notice the upgrades in multitasking, since switching applications is extremely simple these days.
Unsurprisingly, the new 5S and 5C models have come with a similar battery – 1440mAh. Apple has promised a longer autonomy though. It might be there, but then, noticing such small differences is almost impossible. Do not expect the smartphone to support your Internet sessions, 3G and Wi-Fi connections, games and long talks without demanding the recharger at the end of the day.
Apple has maintained the tradition at this level though – none of these models offers access to the battery.
iPhone 5 – 5c – 5s Comparison Chart
iPhone 5S represents a step ahead for Apple, but it is not a revolutionary one. The design is pretty much the same. The most significant changes tackle the hardware platform and the camera, while the operating system is unchanged.
On a different note, it looks like iPhone 5 “copies” the hardware platform of iPhone 5. It sounds strange, but in reality, it becomes an exquisite upgrade for Apple. Why? Easy – Apple gains access to potential customers who overlooked these smartphones due to their high prices.
Apple’s new strategy to release two iPhone models at the same time was both risky and courageous. Just like you have probably noticed over the past years (since the first iPhone hit the market), the two devices have gained plenty of positive attention. They will make iPhone 5 history, especially since it was withdrawn from sales right away.
